Every person who has heard of psychotherapy knows that psychotherapists for some reason often work specifically with the client’s childhood period. In this short post, I want to clarify this topic a bit.

Those of us who live consciously and realize that their well-being is their own responsibility rightly believe that they can build a happy and effective life. However, when they begin to put this into practice (starting a business, building a career, creating a strong family, managing chronic illnesses, etc.), it turns out that there are certain limitations that either make achieving these goals more difficult or impossible. And these limitations can appear in any form in any area of life. This is the influence of the very past. The most common limitations are the attunements that a person receives in the family. And it is not even that he considers them correct – he just lives this way and does not even realize it. And if there is something missing in a person’s settings, then trying to live differently causes extreme stress.

Imagine a child who is brought up by very strict parents, who are literally shut up and certainly not allowed to command. This child is very well-mannered, learns well, is quiet at school, quite possibly successfully finds the sphere of his professional realization. And then he finds a job in his specialty, becomes a good specialist and … need to move up the career ladder. And for this most likely will have to become a manager, where you need to be able to lead, and negotiate, and pressure, and possibly intimidate, that is, to influence by force. And you can only imagine what stress all this will cause in a person who has been gagged since childhood.

Imagine a girl who was brought up by her mother and grandmother, all childhood telling that “all men are assholes”. And if mom and dad divorced, and the girl with her dad is not really communicating, then it is a very “colorful” picture. Then such a girl with a lack of love from her father and conviction from her mother and grandmother, grows up and sincerely wants to meet a good guy and create a happy family. But in reality it turns out to meet such as in the belief, because the settings are such, and to get into a difficult co-dependent relationship, because very much lacked a father in her life.

How is it so? Let’s start with the fact that the lion’s share of information about ourselves, others and the world, a person learns in childhood. According to some data, up to the age of six, a person learns 75% of everything that he or she learns in life. At this age, of course, the child is not able to somehow realize, analyze, filter information or evaluate it. Moreover, the child does not have any protection from his parents, so he will accept from them whatever they will shove into him, even if it is unpleasant or harmful. And on such conditions the basic beliefs are formed in the child, we can say, about everything in the world. He forms ideas about himself, about others and relationships with these others, about adult roles, about what the world is like and so on.

And so, when an adult with some problem comes to a psychologist or psychotherapist, it is assumed that the experience can simply be realized, and this should help the client to solve the problem. And indeed, when a person has realized the mechanism of the problem, it actually becomes easier for him, but further he goes on in life and, makes the same mistakes. But there is the practice of explaining, and there is the practice of solving. That is, it turns out that the experience should not only be realized, but also worked through, it is necessary to change the consequences that it carries for the current life of the client. This is what quality psychotherapy allows us to do.

I think the topic of crisis is just super relevant at the moment. There is a war in our country right now, which has been a serious shock for all of us. Life will never be the same again. But how to survive it all and not get depressed? How to cope? And here we will talk not only about the war, but also about crises in general.

The whole essence of crisis is perfectly reflected in the Chinese character that denotes this concept. It seems to consist of two parts. The first part is “the collapse of everything that was”, the second part is “new opportunities”. And what should be done to move from the collapse to opportunities?

The first thing is to accept the situation. This is not easy. When a crisis bursts into our lives, we realize that we can’t go on as before, it won’t work. This causes fear, resistance and rejection. This is a normal reaction to a situation, but the longer you get stuck in it, the harder it will be to get out. When you accept the situation, you regain contact with reality and the ability to act adequately in it. And when you realize you’re stuck, that’s a sure signal to see a specialist.

The second thing is to let go of everything that is leaving. In a crisis, losses are possible, sometimes very painful. Of course, if we are talking about the loss of loved ones, this is a separate topic. In this case it is necessary to give yourself time to grieve about the loss and mourn. But more often we lose habitual social ties, work or business, permanent income, sometimes property.

The third is, so to speak, maintaining oneself in an adequate state. This point is about gradually regaining control of your life. This is what is called “not to sour”. It is necessary to keep yourself and the space around you in cleanliness and order, take care of your health, diet and regimen. It’s even better to start doing exercise in the morning or something like that. This will distract and energize you. Some people in a crisis situation, these seemingly elementary things are given with great difficulty. And, okay, if a person does not wash his hair for a week, does not clean the house or does not sleep at night, but if such a situation is prolonged, it is already an alarm bell.

The fourth is to reflect on the situation. Why did this crisis happen and are you so affected by it? What led to it? How to neutralize the consequences? What decisions need to be made now? What can you do now to normalize the situation? If you can answer these questions calmly, you are on your way out. This is a very important point. The answers to these questions make up a lot of your development. If you are confused, analyze the situation with a psychologist.

The fifth is the transition to those “new opportunities”. You want something in life, don’t you? And always wanted. Moreover, the crisis is very refreshing perception. It makes you think about things that you haven’t thought about before or put them off for the indefinite future. Life has taken you out of your comfort zone against your will – so move into the zone of development.

While re-listening to one of the training seminars, I noticed a cool and important idea that I can’t help but share. So, let’s say you have a goal that is really desirable for you. This goal involves more than one day of effort. It turns out that achieving the goal consists of two components: motivation and discipline. As for motivation, it is absolutely necessary, without it you will not do anything. And if the goal is really desirable for you, then you have motivation.

But discipline is more difficult. Achieving a more or less significant goal (gaining material well-being, self-realization, weight loss, after all) involves daily routine efforts. And, if at first, you, inspired and motivated, happily do everything that is necessary, the further you go, the more acute the issue of discipline becomes. Procrastination may also appear at this stage, precisely as a consequence of lack of discipline. And here we even want to ask an interesting question: what is more important to achieve the goal – motivation or discipline? Think about it.

You know, there are some people who, if something needs to be done, just go ahead and do it. Are you in that category? If so, great! You have no problem with discipline, and congratulations! And what to do if you don’t? There are solutions, of course. If you do not resort to psychotherapy, you can try to use the so-called “simple willed actions”, which I wrote about earlier. And it is possible to solve this problem with the help of psychotherapy. I should mention that the possibilities of psychotherapeutic methods are really wide, and the causes of procrastination can be very individual, and the solution is selected accordingly. However, it is absolutely certain that for any client it is possible to take an appropriate resource (for example, conscientiousness) and “turn it on”. Here I would like to point out that when we use resourcing in therapy, we do not take anything from outside, we use what is in the person, and the person has absolutely everything he or she needs. That is, we simply “turn on” this or that quality or state. And, in addition, it is desirable to adjust the appropriate model of behavior. And, voila, you are already the person who takes and does!

There are quite a few people in our society who want everyone to like them. And this is a serious problem. And the problem is not in the desire to be liked and accepted by others – it is perfectly normal. The problem lies, first of all, in behavior. That is, a person behaves in a certain way to please others, and does it unconsciously. We can say that this is an external manifestation of the problem. What causes this behavior we will talk about later. And this behavior quite often does not bring the expected results, and quite the contrary, can cause rejection or misunderstanding from others. And secondly, the problem lies even deeper – in the feeling (understanding, realization, you can call it whatever you like) of one’s own value, or rather in its absence. This is, let us conditionally call it, the internal cause of the problem.

In the process of psychotherapy with such a client, we work with both aspects. We start, of course, with the internal causes, the very realization of one’s own value. And this can be a rather complicated and laborious process. The roots of such a problem naturally go back to childhood. A person who experiences such a problem, once, as a child, faced the fact that he is not accepted as he is. And he is not accepted by the closest people – parents or those who replace them. And a small child wants very much to be accepted and loved, it is vital for him.

This situation may look absolutely different, each case is different. But, since then, this person has simply not grown up in some area of his or her life, or maybe in several. He or she, in a sense, has remained at that age and is still trying to be liked and earn acceptance and love. And they do it in the same way they did when they were children. If mom or dad responded approvingly to ingratiation, then such a person in adulthood will ingratiate himself to others. If pleasing worked in childhood, then the person will seek to please, etc. As has already been said, such actions occur unconsciously, and not always have a positive reaction from others.

Such a person may try to please and be accepted by his partner, by his colleagues. He may strive to maximize everyone’s liking, or someone in particular. But, in any case, he needs confirmation of his value from other people. In general, the sense of one’s own value has a great influence on many areas of life, on one’s ability to be both happy and effective. I will touch on this topic many times in my notes.

When such a client finally gets rid of this trauma and realizes his value, his sense of inner satisfaction and freedom increases and he becomes satisfied with himself. He begins to really like himself. This will definitely have a positive effect on behavior, making it more free and natural. If necessary, we additionally work specifically with behavior. His relationships with people change and become better, easier and more satisfying. He is much less concerned about what and to whom he said and how he looked in the eyes of others. He begins to realize that even if he wasn’t perfect, it doesn’t make him less valuable.
